ISI’s Viking SCBA Gets NIOSH Approval for
CBRN Use, Adding Value to The Market’s Most Advanced
Respiratory Protection Device For Firefighters.
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The ISI Viking, the most advanced
self-contained breathing
apparatus (SCBA) available
for firefighters, has been approved by the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
for use in the presence of potential chemical, biological,
radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents.
The ISI Viking DX and the ISI Viking DXL, two versions
of an SCBA manufactured for firefighters by International
Safety Instruments Inc. (ISI), are approved by NIOSH for
CBRN use. The ISI Viking ST for law enforcement also received
approval. All of these units meet the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) 1981, 2002 Edition requirements as
well.
The CBRN test exposed the Viking SCBA to Sarin and mustard
agents, demonstrating that these agents did not penetrate
the ISI Viking’s facemask or pneumatic assemblies.
ISI tested numerous materials to build a product that
meets the rigors of the NFPA burn tests but also is able
to protect users against agents that may be used in a
terrorist attack. “ISI is known for its unmatched
commitment to research that ensures the highest product
quality,” said Mike Vezmar, Director of Sales &
Marketing, “which is why our Viking SCBAs passed
the NIOSH tests on the first submittal attempt.”
The Viking SCBA with CBRN approval is available with 2216
or 4500-psi cylinders. Options include Voice Amplification,
PASS, radio interface, airline attachment and buddy breather.
ISI is known to firefighters as a manufacturer of the
highest quality respiratory protection equipment and thermal
imaging systems featuring advanced, time-saving technology.
ISI provides training, service and repair for all of its
products. More information on the ISI Viking for firefighters

The Viking SCBA with CBRN approval is available with 4500-psi
cylinders. Options include Voice Amplification, PASS and
radio interface. ISI’s Viking SCBA with 2216 rated
cylinders is now being submitted for CBRN testing, with
approval expected by mid-year. At that time, both high-pressure
and low-pressure models will be available with additional
options, including an airline attachment and buddy breather.
In late 2004, a CBRN retrofit kit will be available to
upgrade existing Viking DX or DXL devices that are NFPA
2002 compliant.
